About Us
Mission Statement:
The mission of the members of Salem Saturday Market is:
- to provide local growers of agricultural products, producers of prepared foods, artisans and crafters with the opportunity, sites and services to market their products directly to the consumer;
- to enhance the quality of life in the Willamette Valley by providing our community with a vibrant, environmentally responsible gathering place;
- to strengthen and encourage community support for our local economy.
The Market’s selling policy is to enable a customer to buy something from the person who made or grew it. All items must be handmade, grown, cooked or crafted by the member. All Market vendors are members of SSM and are juried by a committee of their fellow vendors before selling at the market to assure that only top quality foods, plants, produce and handcrafted items are sold at the Market. Vendors must be compliant with the requirements for licensure and inspection unique to their product and insurance coverage is required.
History:
Governance: SSM is a 501(c) 6 non-profit corporation with a current membership of 200+ members who are vendors at one or both of the weekly markets in Salem. The corporation is governed by a 7 member Board of Directors. All Board Members are volunteers and vendors with the Market. They are elected by the membership for 2 year terms, ending in alternate years. Elections are held in July and any member/vendor in good standing is eligible to run for the Board. Meetings of the Board of Directors are scheduled and open to members. The Board of Directors supervises all Market employees, including the Business Manager, Market Manager and their assistants.
